At the Brooklyn office of Dr. Marc Hertz, we have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs and symptoms of oral cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified. While these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is very important to visit your Flatland oral surgeon for a routine screening to rule out the possibility of oral cancer.

Cyst/Abscess Removal

Dental or oral cysts are a fairly common occurrence in the mouth. In addition to cysts that grow along the gum line, this may also grow on the inside of the cheek, the tongue, as well as the floor of the mouth. A cyst is medically defined as a fluid filled sac or pouch, but can also appear as a growth of any kind, including an irregularly shaped patch of skin. Regardless, this should be removed and tested by your Flatland oral surgeon to ensure that growth is benign.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the pharynx (the back of the throat). Oral cancer accounts for roughly two percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States. Oral cancer most often occurs in people over the age of 40 and affects more than twice as many men as women.

Common risk factors for oral cancer, include tobacco and alcohol use, HPV, older age, excessive sun exposure, and unhealthy diet. Most cases of oral cancer are linked to cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use, or the use of both tobacco and alcohol together. Using tobacco plus alcohol poses a much greater risk than using either substance alone. Infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (specifically the HPV 16 type) has been linked to a subset of oral cancers. Risk increases with age. Oral cancer most often occurs in people over the age of 40. Cancer of the lip can be caused by sun exposure. A diet low in fruits and vegetables may play a role in oral cancer development.

Surgical Removal of Wisdom Teeth by Brooklyn Oral Surgeon, Dr. Marc Hertz

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. This generally occurs between the ages of 17 and 25, a time of life that has been called the “Age of Wisdom.” Wisdom teeth, if present, may not erupt into the mouth.  When they do not erupt they are considered impacted.  Wisdom teeth which are not impacted typically erupt between 17-21 years old. Often the process of tooth eruption is painful and has associated complications, therefore, we recommend a consultation at 15-17 years old prior to eruption.  A consultation at this age with your Flatbush oral surgeon is important as most will not have adequate space in their jaw for eruption of their wisdom teeth.

Are wisdom teeth required for normal chewing function?  No, in fact if a person does have adequate space for the eruption of wisdom teeth these teeth only provide very limited chewing function.  Furthermore, wisdom teeth often have short roots and can not adequately support bridges or partials. Wisdom teeth are considered vestigial organs, considered to be an imperfectly formed organ that has little to no utility.

Though most people do not experience pain with their wisdom teeth, that does not mean complications won’t arise. Most problems with wisdom teeth progress slowly and by the time a problem does become evident, damage may have already occurred. Remember, each person is different, therefore your individual situation can only be determined through a thorough oral examination and evaluation with your trusted oral surgeons at the dental office of Dr. Marc Hertz.

Brooklyn Surgical Tooth Extractions

The relative ease at which your local oral surgeon in Flatbush Brooklyn, NY can extract your wisdom teeth depends on the position of the impacted teeth. A pre-extraction examination at our dental offices on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn will give us a better idea of what you should expect during extraction. A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted through the gum can be extracted as easily as any other tooth. However, a wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums and embedded in the jawbone, requires an incision into the gums and then removal of the portion of bone that lies over the tooth. Oftentimes, the tooth will be extracted in small sections rather than removed in one piece to minimize the amount of bone that needs to be removed to get the tooth out.

Following surgery, you may experience some swelling and mild discomfort, which are part of the normal healing process. Cold compresses may help decrease the swelling, and medication prescribed by your Brooklyn Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon can help manage the discomfort. You may be instructed to modify your diet following surgery and later progress to more normal foods.
